Pros and Cons of Having Household Firearms

Pros and Cons of Having Household FirearmsIt is unusual for people to own and carry a firearm on their person or at home. However, a great number of individuals who think their life are at risk of danger keep different kinds of security defense weapons for their personal security.

Owning a weapon gives homeowners a great sense of security and power. It should go without saying; household firearms have to be handled with extreme care and always kept in a safe location, like a gun safe or any safe in general.  Which brings up my point, do the pros of owning a household firearm outweigh the cons?

It is well known that one must first obtain a license by the home state of where the firearm is to be registered. In the event a mishap occurs, the person responsible will be the license holder for the firearm. If by chance the moment arises where you have to pull out and point the firearm, you may be increasing the chances of injury or even worse death. The burglar or intruder will try to protect themselves and in so have a firearm also. If the need to own and carry a firearm is great, it is advisable to be well trained and only use it when necessary.

Keeping a gun at home in a gun safe is the best procedure to follow to avoid accidents, but is not very practical in case of real emergencies. How realistic is it if your monitored security system alerts you that someone broke into your property while you quickly try to open the gun safe in time to ward off the burglar or intruder. Hopefully by then the alarm company should have dispatched the police to avoid any injuries. But is your sense of security compromised?

Usually there are legal ramifications for owning a firearm. In some states, it is against the law to even own a firearm, much less a concealed one. If it were to be used in “self defense” the claim must be taken to court and a judge has to determine to motive behind the use and legality of the firearm. This hefty sentence causes many to completely avoid the risk of owning a firearm and puts at jeopardy the security of the home and family.

The greatest fear that firearm owners have is that their children find and misuse the weapon. Children too often see images that imply wielding a gun is “cool” in the form of movies or TV shows. This is an urgent thought that must be addressed and handled with care. With the proper education and of course keeping the firearm from within the reach of children will reduce the chances of an accidental injury or worse.

Installing a safe in the house for hiding weapons and valuables is usually the best alternative to concealing the gun in a drawer or closet. There are many home security companies that provide this service and of course one can always “google it” for information.

If the state that you reside in legally allows the ownership and the right to carry firearms, then do so, but keep in mind the penalties, the risks, and the responsibility associated with it.  If the need to take the firearm out of the home arises make sure you have the proper licenses, for example concealed weapons license, assigned by your home state.

Otherwise, it may just be wise to avoid all the problems that a firearm may cause altogether. If you don’t feel safe then you can always find alternative solutions to finding your true sense of security. You can have installed a Monitored Home Security System that makes certain if your home is burglarized the proper authorities, who have the knowledge and experience with firearms, will be dispatched to your home.
