Four Mistakes Young Families Should Stop Making with their Home

adt miami for businessMoving into a new home, especially when you are a young family, can be an exciting event. A new spouse, perhaps a new baby, can be overwhelming to say the least. With this in mind, don’t take for granted your home’s security. Sometimes we forget the only thing separating you and your family from the unknown is perhaps a flimsy door or a pane of glass. Below are a few mistakes young families should stop making with their home security.

1. Never underestimate, or otherwise take for granted, what is in the hearts and minds of criminals. Over the last few years criminals have shown us they are capable of every misdeed known to man. As we read these reports, or watch the news, you may find yourself saying “that could never happen to me.” You only need to check your local Miami news agencies ‘crime’ section to find out anything is possible with Miami criminals.

2. Never assume your homes previous owner was an upstanding citizen. Be sure to replace your homes door locks the first chance you get. Also, check the exterior of your home for any spare keys hidden under door mats or fake rocks. Having a criminal break into your home is already an injury enough; don’t add insult by providing them with the key to your home.

3. Young families with young children have a tendency of utilizing their outside space for all of its worth. Be it playing sports in the backyard or bicycling up and down the street. Be sure to handle outside toys with a watchful eye. Criminals cruise around neighborhoods looking for easy targets. A child’s bicycle left in the front yard affords them such an easy score. Once a bike is stolen it is almost always gone for good.

4. A great way to protect your items is by keeping a log of serial numbers and values in a safe place. In the event they are stolen you can provide the police a list of serial numbers they can be on the lookout for. In these regards, you can also provide the value of the items in order to give to your insurance company for replacement.

There is nothing like a young family moving into a neighborhood and starting their family. Interacting with neighbors and establishing roots is what creates a strong community. Don’t fall victim to criminals looking to capitalize on your youth.
