Every year the Federal Bureau of Investigation releases a crime statistics report entitled Crime in the United States, which represents crime reported by law enforcement agencies. The FBI’s 2007 report revealed a decrease of 0.2 percent when compared with 2006 data, an estimated total of 2,179,140 burglaries. Although this is a decrease, homeowners should still be surprised. It is essential that homeowners be well informed on the nation’s state in regard to crime, in order to better prepare themselves and prevent further advancement of crime.

Here are some additional statistics released by the FBI’s 2007 report:

An examination of 5- and 10-year trends revealed an increase of 1.1 percent in the number of burglaries when compared with the 2003 estimate, and a decline of 6.6 percent when compared with the 1998 estimate.

Burglary accounted for 22.1 percent of the estimated number of property crimes committed in 2007.

Of all burglaries, 61.1 percent involved forcible entry, 32.4 percent were unlawful\entries (without force), and the remaining 6.5 percent were forcible entry attempts.

In 2007, burglary offenses cost victims an estimated $4.3 billion in lost property overall, the average dollar loss per burglary offense was $1,991.

Burglary of residential properties accounted for 67.9 percent of all burglary offenses.

Offenses for which time of occurrence was known showed that 57.4 percent of burglaries took place during the day and 42.6 percent at night.

Offenses for which time of occurrence was known showed that more residential burglaries (63.6 percent) occurred during the daytime, while 56.4 percent of nonresidential burglaries occurred during nighttime hours.

These facts are shocking to say the least, because they are an attack against the place where one should feel the safest and free, the home. The good news however is that you can do something to prevent your family and home from being victimized by such acts of violence. Here are some great security facts everyone needs to know in order to help protect you and your family:

Keep doors and windows locked, even those on second stories. What many burglaries do is enter through these open windows and balcony or porch doors.

Have secure locking devices installed on all windows.

Have solid, reinforced doors installed on all exterior doorways, including doors from the garage to the interior of the home. Make sure that each door is secured with a high quality deadbolt.

Close the garage door, because an open garage door is an open invitation into the home. Garage doors should be closed even when a homeowner is at home.

If purchasing a new home invest in an entire “re-keying” of the property. This is also a good idea if you have lost your keys and are unable to relocate them.

When relying on spare keys, do not hide them, but rather leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor. This is a safer alternative since many burglaries occur due to spare keys under the doormat or in a flowerpot.

Install security lights, motion sensor lights and patio or walkway lights wherever you can. A burglar does not want to be seen; therefore having well-lit areas will be a restriction to their break-in.

Use timers to make a home look occupied if it is going to be empty for a prolonged period of time.

Have a dependable and monitored home security system installed.

An ADT monitored home security system is not only an excellent investment, but it is also the best crime prevention for your home and family. Most convicted criminals point out that they would simply walk away from a property that exhibited home security tags. The best part is that whether you are home or away, you have 24/7 monitoring to guarantee that your home is being protected, at all times. With proper safety precautions and a monitored home security system, you can rest in knowing you have done the best to protect your family and home.

Living in this current economic crisis has been extremely financially difficult for many American families. While residing in modern day America brings many comforts and conveniences in spite of our current economy, some things never go away, such as crime. In all areas of the United States, home burglaries and other home related crimes continue to be a problem. It is actually estimated that in Miami Dade County, from 2004 to 2008 the percentage of home intrusions increased by 10%. Home safety and security is a top priority to all families, and for many families installing a home security system is the best way to ensure that safety and security.

The average cost of a home break-in is around $2,000. Financially that is quite a burden, while in addition to having to bear that financial burden, one is left with the feeling of being unprotected in your own home and knowing that someone has gone through all of your personal belongings. After realizing how costly and fear-provoking a break-in can be, it should be a bit more clear to see why it is so important to get a home security system. Protecting your home from an intrusion is simple and less costly than you might think. And the peace of mind that you get from knowing that your loved ones, home, and belongings are safe is something you cannot put a price on.

Installing a home security system can actually financially benefit your family in more ways than one. Most burglars admit to avoiding homes that are secured with a home security system. When the intrusion is avoided, financial loss and emotional stress is avoided as well. In the case of a home break-in, when an alarm is activated, most burglars escape the scene as well, avoiding additional financial property and belonging loss and damage.

In addition to preventing and detecting home intrusions, home security systems have other important home safety devices. The United States Fire Administration stated that there was an estimated 1.6 million fires in 2007 and direct property loss due to fires was estimated at $14.6 million. It is also stated that the combination of installing a smoke detector and sprinkler lowers the chance of a fire by 82%. With an ADT approved monitored smoke detector, your home is safe from fire and smoke damage, and you are given quick access to the authorities, whether you are at home, away, or sound asleep. With insured home fire safety, you are reaping substantial financial benefits with the prevention of property loss and damage, and most importantly, the comfort of knowing your family is safe in case of a home fire, at all times.

Another detector that is quite important for preventing property damage and loss is a flood detector. A flood detector alerts your ADT monitoring center of rising water in your home, in order to help prevent severe water damage. Water damage repairs can vary in price greatly; some have even found the amount to repair the water damage to be more expensive then tearing down the home and rebuilding. Therefore, installing a flood detector in your home can be of incredible financial aid to you in case of a water leak or any other flooding situation.

Finally, regardless of home intrusion or any other damage that may occur in your home, if you install an ADT home security, you are guaranteed direct savings. As an ADT customer, you can receive a Home Owner’s Certificate, which may save you up to 20% on your home insurance. Who knew that by simply getting a home security system installed, you would be saving hundreds of dollars? In times when money is tight, it is great to know that your family’s security does not have to be compromised, and that you can actually save some money as well.

As a parent, you are currently most likely preparing to send your child back to school. Excitement and joy come in anticipation of the first day and the many new experiences they will encounter. With these feelings, concern also comes into play, as your child’s protection and safety are of the most importance to you. However, this should not be a time filled with anxiety or fear. There are several things you can do as a parent to ensure the safety of your children as the return to school.

If your child walks to and from school by themselves or if they are a latch key child who will come home from school and be alone for some time, it is critical to educate and prepare your child on how to be safe. During each summer and even during the school year teach your children the different safety measures related with going to school and coming home. Make sure that your child’s walk to school is a safe route with well-trained crossing guards at each intersection. Also, bright colored clothing will make your child more visible to drivers. If it is possible, walk with your child a few times this way you can get a better feeling of how they are abiding by the safety rules. These rules should also apply to children riding their bikes to school.

Our latch key children bring a whole new list of concerns to parents. All children that are going to be home alone after school should be protected by a home security system. This is of most concern since the majority of break-ins occur during the day. When your home is protected by a monitored home security system, most intruders are scared away, and in the case of an intrusion, your child is quickly linked to the monitoring center. ADT has great plans and packages that can meet your families needs and ensure back to school safety in your home.

Your child should know how to arm and disarm your home security system, as well as to lock the door upon home arrival. It may also be a good idea for your child to be instructed to contact you upon arriving at home. You should also instruct your child on not answering the doorbell or telephone. Leave a clearly accessible and visible list in your home for your child of contacts in case of an emergency. No measures are too great to ensure your child’s safety.

In addition to a monitored home security system, other safety equipment are important for you child’s safety. A monitored smoke detector is crucial to your child’s home safety. Children are naturally curious about fire, increasing the risk of a potential home fire. If a child is playing with fire, 53% of the time it occurs in a bedroom, which is full of soft goods, which quickly catch on fire. Thoroughly instruct your child on fire safety rules. The U.S. Fire Administration has a great interactive website for kids to learn about fire safety. In addition to educating your child on fire safety, with an ADT approved monitored smoke detector, your home is safe from fire and smoke damage, and you are given quick access to the authorities, whether you are at home, away, or sound asleep.

Remember that education is the key to back to school safety for your family.

Home security is an important factor for every new home buyer or prospective renter. One of the first things a person considers when selecting an apartment, aside from location and price range, is the level of safety they can assume in day to day living, and the security of any belongings they leave at home. Many tenants rights laws insist upon basic security measures like a peep hole, and a deadbolt lock as well as a keyed entry. Unfortunately, this is not always adequate.

Apartment security systems can let your tenants know who is calling before they unlock the main door to a building. A good system provides an audio channel between the entrance to the building and the apartments inside. Some modern apartment security systems allow tenants to visually verify that it is safe to open the door.

Something few apartment building owners consider is that the tenants of your building may hold you responsible if a home invasion occurs. Having the most advanced apartment security system available will ensure that you are not liable for any burglaries which might occur on your property. There are also a lot of steps you can take to ensure that an apartment security system is effective. Testing and maintaining your system regularly is important. Its a good idea to get into an apartment every time someone moves out and make a few repairs, so why not test the security system while you are in there? If you are not able to adequately test and repair your apartment security system and troubleshoot potential problems you will be able to get qualified assistance from the professionals who sold you or set up your security system. Evening with the amazing advances that have been made in apartment security systems over the years, there are always thieves who are working on ways to get around them.

One of the easiest vulnerabilities of any security system that criminals will try to exploit is the potential for human error. Burglars may try to fool tenants into letting them in, they may even attempt to enter at the same time that somebody else is leaving. Another trick that thieves will use is to attempt to impersonate a professional service technician making a call for service. Thieves will pretend to be plumbers, phone repair, the cable company, you name it.

It is important that you make sure your tenants know not to let in anybody they do not know. This defeats the purpose of the system. Even if a friendly stranger offers to help carry your groceries you should always think twice and never let them past the security door. If you are suspiscious have them use their key or enter their code when you arrive at your apartment building.

Taking steps to ensure your apartment security system is at its’ best and most effective in conjunction with safety and awareness is the best way to prevent.

When you are looking to find the top Miami alarm systems from the best retailers at the best price, the chances are you will wind up spending hours searching the internet, asking friends for referrals and reading reviews of different alarm systems. Its not always easy to find the best products in a given region. A city like Miami has a lot of businesses and retailers, however it also has a lot of criminals and burglars who may attempt to break into your home while you are away, or even while somebody is alone inside the house.

Many break-ins and home invasions occur in broad daylight when people are generally away or at work. The surprising thing is that most criminals and burglars will break in to a home using the front door in the middle of the day. People think of criminals as shady, suspicious looking characters that are unkempt with shabby clothes and hygiene. The truth is, recognizing a criminal is not so easy. Many potential theives or professional burglars will survey neighborhoods looking for the ideal target home to invade. They may even appear at you front door disguised as a deliveryman or a service professional such as a cable repair man or a phone service worker.

Homeowners in the Miami area should be aware that most of these utilities can be serviced from outside the home and there is seldom a reason that you should let these people in. Many times the initial robbery does not occur until after the criminal has been let in to your home and had the ability to scout and survey to determine whether you are worth robbing or not. While inside your home they may be looking for entry and exit points, anything of significant value such as an expensive television or home enterainment center, anything they can get their hands on.

They may also be scouting to see what sort of security measure you have taken. By gaining access to your home, a criminal is able to tell whether you have one the top Miami alarm systems or a device that is more easily tampered with. They may even attempt to accidentally trigger your alarm system, just to watch you disarm it. The best thing you can do is avoid letting any strangers into your home. Unless you are absolutely sure the people at your door are who they say the are, tell them to have their company call you and verify their identity with an employee number or photo ID.

According to FBI national crime reports, the city of Miami had 20288 property crimes and 2111 robberies in 2006 alone. Miami’s crime rates for these types of offences is significantly worse than the national average. Residents and citizens of Miami need to be extra prepared to ensure the worst does not happen to their homes and families. The top Miami alarm systems will provide ideal security for those who are concerned about the safety in their homes.

Hurricane season is coming up, and with hurricane season comes the potential for evacuation. Every year hundreds, if not thousands, of citizens are evacuated due to the threat of potentially deadly hurricanes destroying their homes. This leaves whole communities susceptible to vandals and burglars who choose not to evacuate for that very reason. Do not allow yourself to be an easy target for these vandals. There are a few steps you can take in securing your home while you are away, and make it harder on the thieves who take advantage of evacuation efforts.

Make sure all of the entrances to the home are as secure as possible. This includes dead bolting the doors, adding support bars to your garage door, locking the windows, and covering your windows with plywood or other similar protective measures. You can buy shutters for your windows made specifically to withstand hurricane force winds. This helps in the event that your windows get shattered, would be burglars aren’t given an open invitation to enter your home. This can also assist in keeping the windows from shattering in the first place, not only offering you protection but saving you money on repairs.

Taking your belongings with you seems like an obvious step, but there is no way you will be able to take all of your valuables along with you. Evacuations are usually done on short notice, and in a rush so it is inevitable that under these extenuating circumstances you may leave something behind. To prevent something like this from happening you may want to consider renting a safe deposit box. This will be a great, and safe, place to store valued items such as family jewelry or the important documents such as deeds, birth certificates, and other items that are in danger of being taken by potential looters. Its also a good idea to purchase an in-house safe. This will be a valuable asset to storing items you can’t take with you or put in a safe deposit box. This is especially essential for guns, and serves two purposes. It will not only keep the guns safe from hurricane looters, but will keep guns out of the hands of any children throughout the year.

What might be your most valuable tool in deterring home predators during this time is having a home security system installed in your home. Some models come equipped with a secondary power supply to keep it working effectively even when your home has lost electricity. Providing that phone lines haven’t been destroyed, it will also alert police once a break in has occurred. A loud, potentially nauseating, alarm will be sounded after the grace period is allowed for your pin code to be punched in. That alone is enough to keep looters at bay, but coupled with the law enforcement notification feature a home security system will be your best bet in securing your home while you are away during evacuation.

If you take time to ensure these few measures are followed, you will be well on your way to have a secure home in the event of a hurricane evacuation. There is no way to make sure your home is completely protected in your absence, but these are a few tips to secure it to its maximum potential. For more information in protecting your home against looters you can contact your local authorities.

It is estimated by the U.S. Department of Justice that 1 of every 5 homes in the U.S. will experience either a break-in, fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Safety measures are lawfully dictated on the latter two but currently there are no laws in place to delegate home security systems. Although virtually every home in the U.S. has a fire alarm, there are far less homes with adequate home invasion security systems in place.

Most home invasions occur when nobody is at home or the family is away on vacation. However, even when you are not in the home there are several measures you can take to avoid potential invasions. Most criminals who commit home invasions with the intent to steal money or belongings do not want any confrontation, so they will avoid places where it looks like someone is home. With an inexpensive electronic timer, you can easily have lights and appliances in your home turn on and off at random intervals, giving the illusion that someone is home. You should also consider stopping any mail or newspaper deliveries while you are away on vacation as these will pile up outside your door and set off red flags to potential burglars.

Many criminals will drive around different neighborhoods for weeks as they scout for homes that may be worth invading. One thing they will look for as they drive by night after night is homes that do not have any cars parked in the driveway. Whenever possible you should try to have vehicles parked in your driveway to make it appear that someone is in the house. If possible, have a trusted friend, relative or neighbor periodically stop in and check things out at your home while you are away. Have them move things about in the yard, change the frequency of your electronic timers and open and close different windows and doors throughout the weeks and days to give off the illusion that everything is normal and your family has been in the home. By taking these extra steps to make it seem that your house is occupied, you can greatly decrease your chances of having your home invaded.

Although most preventable break-ins occur when the family is away, sometimes criminals break in to homes with the intention to assault or rape whoever is inside. If you live alone, you may also be a greater risk for having your home invaded. Having a dog is a great way to feel safer in your home. If you don’t have a dog you might want to consider having one to protect you, or at the very least, placing a “Beware of Dog” sign prominently outside your home. The worst thing you can do is be predictable. If people are watching it can be easy to spot and document your routines. Criminals may be able to predict when you will be out of the house, when you will be asleep or when you will be showering or bathing. By changing up your routines periodically you can make yourself less predictable to potential invaders and decrease your chances of being surprised by burlglars and other criminals.

The single best way to protect yourself from home invasion, however, is to invest in a good security system. A security system will not only give you peace of mind, but can halt a break-in before anything of value is stolen. The signs that a security system company can provide can also be a strong deterrent for would-be burglars intent on taking your valuables, or causing you harm.

When you live in an apartment building or complex of apartments it is important to consider that every tenant plays a role in the security of the building. There are important apartment security measures that everyone must consider. Although your landlord or the building manager is responsible for installing a security system for your building, the area of weakness with these systems is the human interface which could allow for error. Even the strongest security system can be breached, but the best way for a burglar to get by a security system in a building is by conning one of the tenants into opening the door for them.

You should never let anyone in the building if you don’t know who they are. Many times a burglar will try to impersonate a service or repairman to gain access to an apartment building. Never let someone in on the claim that they forgot their key or pass code. If someone claims to be a repairman for another apartment, refer them to the apartment manager or the other apartment. Sometimes people will be persistent and pressure you into letting them in. The best thing to do in these situations is call your landlord or the police. Although it is every tenants’ job to make sure that nobody can gain unauthorized access to your building, you cannot simply rely on other people not to make mistakes or poor judgment. Making sure not to let anybody you don’t know in the building is the first step you can take to ensure your safety and security, however you can’t be sure someone else won’t let inadvertently let burglars in. Some important apartment security measures are:

Keep your door locked, even when you are home

Never open your apartment door to strangers

Always verify the identity of a visitor through the peephole

Shockingly, most home invasions occur by the criminal entering through the front door. When we are at home and we hear a knock at the door, our first instinct is to simply open up to speak with whoever is there. However, it is important to know that you can’t always be sure who is on the other side of the door, even if they say who they are. The best thing to do is never open the door until you are certain you know who is on the other side. Asking for identification is important. Have someone show you their credentials through the peephole on your door. Secondly you should ask for a phone number to verify they are scheduled to service your apartment or building. It is important to know that most service for cable, phone service and other utilities can be done from outside the house, and you should always question the reason a service or repairman needs to access your apartment. Typically, you should know about any service or repairs that need to be done in your own place of residence. If there are problems that you might not be aware of, your landlord or superintendant should be the one to let you know about any upcoming service calls.

When choosing a home security system to help protect your home, family and belongings you should never go with the first system you see based on price or convenience. The best dealers of home security equipment and devices will have the resources for you to compare home security systems and decide which one is right for you based on a number of different factors. There are many home security systems which appear to be the best suited to your needs simply due to the lack of choices available from a dealership. As with any electronics, you should always shop around and compare before making any purchases. Although this is even more important with alarm and home security systems because the first job of these devices is to protect you, your family and your belongings from predators. The wrong device could fail you when you need it the most and in many cases the consequences can be devastating.

People and families who fall victim to home invasions are often traumatized and experience a complete lack of safety and security in their own homes. People who have affected by violent or frightening incidents in many cases never fully recover. There is also the significant risk of someone in your home becoming a victim of violence, rape or even murder when the security system fails. The best thing you can do before having a system installed is to compare home security systems based on different factors before you make your decision. Some of the things you will want to consider when you compare security systems for your home could be:

The size of your home/yard

The best area to place a sound device where it will be heard

How many doors and windows need to be secured?

How easy will it be to arm/disarm the system?

How many people need access to the system?

Will you require remote monitoring for your alarm system if the alarm goes off when nobody is around?

Asking yourself these questions before you begin shopping, whether it is online or in a store, will help to determine what you need in a home security system. You should always be wary of retailers who deal with one specific device or home security systems. If they only offer one product, they will likely have to interest in helping you compare home security systems. The only interest they have is selling you their product whether it is the best system for you or not. You should always have choices. If a salesperson is only offering you one option in a home security system, you should seek professional advice elsewhere.

Even the best security systems are only the best for the right homes and properties. There is always a system which is better suited to your specific needs rather than the generic needs of the most basic system. If you aren’t able to compare home security systems from the dealer you are working with, you could be missing out on the protection you and your family need to be safe from violent crimes.
