Does New Technology Interfere with Home Security Systems?

Home Security Systems

Home Security Systems

Technology is constantly evolving, giving us devices, such as, Alexa and Google Home. These devices are cool, but how safe are they? Do they interfere with home security systems? This is the million dollar question a lot of consumers fail to consider.

What Is Alexa?

Alexa is an echo speaker controlled by your voice. It acts as an assistant to help you do things around your home. This wireless device has a variety of features that can be beneficial, including

  • Play music
  • Search the internet
  • Create to-do lists
  • Create shopping lists
  • Receive weather reports
  • Shop online

Alexa, like other smart home devices, have “trigger” words. These words are used to activate the device. Trigger words include, “computer”, “Alexa”, “Echo” or “Amazon”. Once a trigger word is said, the device asks how it can be of service.

What Is Google Home?

Like Alexa, Google Home is an echo speaker that is ready to complete tasks at your command. This device is activated by your voice using commands or prompts, including, “hey Google” or “Google”. This hands-free, wireless device allows you to complete many tasks, including

  • Play music
  • Get answers to questions
  • Personalized help with your schedule
  • Shop online
  • Create a schedule
  • Check the weather

Google Home, like Alexa, turns your home into a “smart home”, and helps you complete simple chores and tasks, such as ordering pizza, flowers or watching your favorite shows on Netflix.

The Risks Associated with Assisting Devices

The Devices Are Listening

One thing is certain, the devices are listening. Due to these always listening devices waiting for a command, privacy matters become an issue. How much of your privacy is compromised by using one of these devices? What’s the big deal? Devices, such a Google Home and Alexa record what you say and sends it to a server. Although the devices are command sensitive, and only record what is said after a trigger word is spoken, how long does the device record? If a trigger word is mentioned on the television, the device will begin recording, and you may not be aware it’s recording.

Compromising Your Home

Having a smart home, a home that is controlled by a phone or computer, can possible be compromised by using an echo speaker. There’s a good chance the assisting device and smart home security are using the same internet connection, and both are wireless. Overhauling your network connection can cause the internet to malfunction and even shut down. Without an internet connection, your entire home is left unsecure, and vulnerable, which means anyone can access your personal accounts through your echo device. These devices may have awesome features and make life a little more convenient, but it’s important to consider the risks associated with new technology. You should also consider the effect it could have on home security systems, as well as, other electronic devices.
