ADT Security Miami

If you would have asked any security system specialist 25 years ago whether wireless sensors were better than hardwired sensors, you would have received an absolute and unanimous answer of no. Wireless window sensors have certainly come a long way in the last 25 years. Today the answer to the same question will definitely have an opposite response because of the way manufacturers have truly perfected wireless window sensors. But before we even get into the reasons why this is true today, lets go over exactly what we are talking about when refer to wireless window sensors.

What exactly do we mean when we talk about window sensors? I mean there are so many different types of windows that we really need to first define what we mean when we say window sensor. If you have a type of window that somehow slides up and down or side by side then window sensors are made for your type of window. If however you have the type of window that cranks out and has a window screen on the inside of your home then window sensors do not apply to you. The sole purpose of a window sensor is to make your security system react when the window is opened but only n the case of windows that slide up and down or in the case that your windows slide sideways like a mini sliding door. How these window sensors work has not changed in over 30 years. The technology is basically the same even though the encasement of the sensor may look different. A window sensor is basically two strips of thin metal wrapped in glass which has screws for it to attach to a pair of wires which go back to the alarm systems control panel. A miniature magnet is placed parallel to the window sensor so that the magnetic field of the magnet causes the two strips of metal to join and thus causing the current flowing thru the two wires to be continuous. If the magnet is removed from the area of the window sensor then the magnetic filed drops and thus causes an interruption of the flow of current in the wires. This continuous current tells the control panel that the window is opened or closed and thus causes an alarm condition at any given time. So in essence if your window is the type that slides up and down the when it is shut the window sensor is parallel to the magnet and the alarm shows a closed circuit. If then the same window is slid open then that causes the magnet to separate from the window sensor and then it will show an open condition at your control panel.

Now that we have defined what a window sensor is we can move on to the task of identifying which is better, a wired window sensor or a wireless window sensor. Some years ago this was very easy to answer because the wireless sensors that existed were not very effective in their ability to provide a high level of security. One of the reasons for that is that the original wireless window sensors were limited to just a handful of sensor IDs and caused great confusion when installed in different homes within the same neighborhood. Just imagine that you installed a wireless window sensor in your home and used the factory ID setting on your sensors and then your neighbor across the street decides to do exactly the same thing and uses the same factory ID setting on his system. By doing this you will set his alarm off and he will set your alarm off because since they are wireless sensors using the same ID setting neither system can  tell the difference.

Thankfully today’s wireless window sensors are equipped with a unique ID that cannot be duplicated by anyone installing a system nearby.
